Title: Preliminary Results from a Brief Point-of-Prescription Intervention to Improve Appropriate Use of Opioids

About the Presentation: Dr. Winstanley will be presenting on the development and testing of a brief intervention to improve the safe use, storage and disposal of prescription opioids. The intervention occurred at the point-of-prescription in the hospital and was delivered by a Student Pharmacist; web-based information and scripted counseling was delivered as part of the intervention. The presentation will include content on 1) measurement of non-medical use of prescription opioids, 2) results from the website testing phase and 3) preliminary follow-up outcomes.

About the Presenter:  Dr. Winstanley is an Associate Professor at West Virginia University, Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. Dr. Winstanley received her doctoral degree from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and she has over 18 years of experience as a behavioral health services researcher. Dr. Winstanley has received funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), as well as local foundations and state agencies. Her current research is focused on reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with the opioid epidemic, as well as the use of technology to improve access and quality of behavioral health services.
