National Public Health Week at Dartmouth

During the first week of April every year, the American Public Health Association brings communities together to recognize contributions of public health and highlight issues critical to improving the nation. This year’s daily themes contribute to the discussion of “Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health.” 

Join TDI during the week of April 1-April 6, 2019, for a series of events promoting health in our community:

Monday 4/1 - Global Health: Bending the Arc Screening & Discussion
Time: 5:30pm - 8:30pm | Location: Haldeman Center 041 (Kreindler Conference Room) | Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
“Thirty years ago, when extraordinary doctors and activists worked to save lives in a rural Haitian village, their project turned into a global battle”
Screening and discussion facilitated by the Global Health Initiative Program Director Anne Sosin, MPH.

Tuesday 4/2 - Rural Health: Themed Trivia Night at Skinny Pancake
Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm | Location: Skinny Pancake, Hanover | 10% off food
“Rural communities face a range of health disparities from higher burden of chronic disease to limited access to primary care and prevention services.”
Join us for a rural health themed trivia and test your knowledge of health disparities.

Wednesday 4/3 -  Violence Prevention: Violence Prevention Fair
Time: 5:30pm - 7pm |Location: Haldeman’s Russo Gallery & Haldeman 125| Ramunto’s pizza
“60% of American children are exposed to violence, crime, or abuse in their homes, schools and communities.”
Join WISE and the Dartmouth Student Wellness Center in learning about their services, the prevalence of violence and effect on our community as well as how to be an ‘upstander.’

Thursday 4/4 - Tech and Public Health: Tech in Healthcare & Unplug with Yoga
Time: 5:30pm - 7pm | Location: GRAD Lounge | dinner from Base Camp
“New technologies are quickly transforming the public health landscape”
Dr. Susan McGrath, Director of Research of the Patient Safety Learning Lab speaks on ‘Design and Performance Measurement of a General Care Setting Surveillance Monitoring System’ followed by yoga with Reed Bratches, MPH student.

Friday 4/5 - Climate Change: Climate Change Panel & Discussion
Time: 12pm - 1pm | Location: Haldeman Center 041 (Kreindler Conference Room) | lunch from Tuk Tuk
“Like so many health threats, climate change is also expected to disproportionately impact already vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, families living in poverty and people with chronic diseases.”
Panel featuring Dr. Kathleen Bush of NH’s Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Erich Ostenberg of Dartmouth’s Earth Sciences Department & Dickey Center for International Understanding, and Dr. Elizabeth Talbot of DHMC’s Infection Disease and International Health. Moderated by Dr. Robert McLellan, TDI professor and national leader in occupational and environmental medicine. 

Saturday 4/6 - Healthy Communities: Service Trip to Upper Valley Haven
Time: 9:30am - 11:30am | Location: Upper Valley Haven, 713 Hartford Ave, White River Junction, VT
“It’s clear: People’s health, longevity and well-being are connected to their  communities - the places we live, learn, work and play.”
Join us to cook a meal and help stock the food pantry. Rides will leave from Dewey Lot.
